Introduction

You've already learned about acids and bases, so now we will turn our discussion to a way to measure the acidity of a substance – the pH scale. You may have heard of the pH scale before. It ranges from 0-14 and helps us determine the strength of acids and bases. There are many different ways to measure the pH of a substance including indicators, litmus paper, and digital pH meters. At the end of this lesson, you will be performing your own lab to measure the pH of different substances.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Match acids and bases to their location on the pH scale.
  • Analyze and interpret data using acid-base indicators.

Enduring Understandings

  • Chemical reactions occur constantly all around us.
  • Acids, bases, and the pH scale are important for understanding the environment, everyday chemicals, and processes in our bodies.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Physical Science standards: 4.
