Introduction

Energy is transferred from one form to another. In a roller coaster, the cart takes you high up to give you the highest gravitational potential energy. The energy present at the beginning of the ride is also present during the ride and at the end of the ride. This energy has changed forms throughout the entire ride.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Describe the law of conservation of energy as related to the transformations of potential energy and kinetic energy
  • Investigate the relationship between kinetic, potential, and mechanical energy

Enduring Understandings

  • Energy can be transformed from one form to another.
  • Models can be used to show conversion of energy from one form into another form of energy.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Physical Science standards: 11.

This lesson incorporates the following Literacy Standards: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R10, W1, W2, W3, W4, W9, and W10.
