Introduction
To better understand the foundation of good nutrition, it is necessary to discuss the basic nutrients for energy and growth. They are:
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Fats
- Vitamins and Minerals
- Water
Your body needs different fuels for different functions. Your brain needs different types of fuel to process thoughts than your sprained ankle needs to heal. Your stomach needs a different type of fuel to digest food than your lungs use to move oxygen from your blood into the cells.
That is why you need different types and amounts of nutrients.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...
- Identify the 6 basic classes of nutrients
- Name the functions of each nutrient
- Explain food buying, storage, and preparation techniques that conserve nutrients
Essential Questions
- What nutrients come from different food groups?
- What do each of the nutrients do in my body?
Enduring Understandings
- Different food groups contribute different nutrients
- A balanced diet consists of a variety of required nutrients
The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Dietetics standards: 2, 9.
