Introduction

Fractions

Don't be scared! You probably read the lesson title and wanted to avoid this lesson entirely! However, fractions are very important in daily life and you will use them more than you think.

We're talking about different kinds of fractions than this fractured house but they can still make you scared like this boy!

Fractions can be used to represent measurements. For example, if you are building a house and you have a piece of wood that is 1½ feet too long, it could potentially cause problems with the structure of your house.

To tackle fractions, you must first know how to simplify fractions, change improper fractions to mixed numbers, change mixed numbers to improper fractions, and find least common denominators.

Let's test your knowledge!

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Apply previous understanding of addition and subtraction to add and subtract fractions.

Essential Questions

  • How are rational numbers different from irrational numbers?
  • Why is it important to know how to perform operations on rational numbers?
  • How can we use one or more of the four basic math operations to solve real-world and mathematical problems?

Enduring Understandings

  • Operations create relationships between numbers.
  • Real-world math problems are solved by using one or more of the four basic mathematical operations.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Grade 7 Mathematics standards: 4.
