Introduction
Have you noticed that newspapers “look” like newspapers? Aside from being printed on special paper, called newsprint, they follow design guidelines. Putting together a newspaper page can be a lot like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Many student newspaper staffs today rely on design templates, where a publishing company sets up the way the pages will look (the layout) and students “cut and paste” their work into the pre-designed spaces.
Other student newspapers make their own templates, or even create unique design layouts with each issue. Whatever method your school follows, you need to be familiar with the basic elements of design.
