Profile Features

Profile features are very popular in student newspapers. A profile feature is an article about an individual. It often includes material about his/her hobbies, involvement at school, philosophy of life, etc.

Human Interest Features

Human interest features aren't very newsy, but focus on a closer look at life. "A day in the life of..." stories are an example. Human interest features often highlight unique qualities or experiences.

Historical Features

Historical features can be nostalgic about the good ole days or simply focus on an interesting aspect of life in earlier generations. North Alabama student journalists may write a piece on Native American life at Russell Cave for instance, while South Alabama student journalists might focus on life at the Mobile Bay Lighthouse.

Holiday Features

Holiday features, of course, need to be timely in student newspapers...no one really wants to read about favorite Christmas carols in February. From dealing with Valentine stress to how to get that mortar board to stay on one's head at graduation, holiday features can be interesting to read and write.
