  1. On September 11, 2001, members of a global terrorist organization called al-Queda hijacked four passengers airliners in flight over the United States. Their goal was to crash the planes into pre-selected targets in New York City and Washington, D.C. Three planes reached their targets; a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. The terrorist attacks, referred to as "September 11 attacks" or "9/11", resulted in the deaths of 2,977 and the 19 terrorists, and caused at least $10 billion in damage.
  2. The terrorists managed to crash two airliners, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Within two hours, both towers collapsed, killing more than 2,600 victims, and causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the World Trade Center complex.
