Introduction

Read the highlighted areas on the image to learn more about the political cartoon.

This 1897 print, titled "Extra session of the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth Congress", shows Thomas B. Reed, Speaker of the House of Representatives, sitting at the Speaker's desk and, oversized, as the only member of Congress present (Library of Congress).

  1. Notice how large Speaker Reed is portrayed by the cartoonist. Do you think that says anything about his power and presence in Congress
  2. Notice that no one else is present. It is almost as if Speaker Reed is the most important member of Congress, or at least the only member needed to take care of business
  3. Notice the gavel in Speaker Reed's hand as he sits behind the desk. The gavel represents the power of the speaker of the house.
