If you walk into a German building and ask how to get to the first floor, you might be surprised to have someone point you in the direction of the stairs! In Germany, the first floor is the first one above the ground/street level. What we in America call the first floor is called das Erdgeschoss, usually designated by E or EG. So the first floor in Germany would actually be the second floor in a typical American house. The diagram below shows the differences between the German and American floor numbering systems.
