Introduction

Many things in real life can be expressed as ratios. For example, a baseball player's batting average is a ratio that compares the number of base hits to the number of times at bat.

Using MLB Players, research a major league baseball player's stats to see what the MLB total batting average is for the player you choose.

In this lesson we will learn how ratios are used in geomerty to prove objects are similar.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Write ratios as a fraction.
  • Identify the parts of a proportion.
  • Solve a proportion.
  • Use extended ratios to solve problems.

Enduring Understandings

  • A proportion is an equation that equates two ratios.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Geometry standard: 15
