Introduction

Grands Magasins

The Grands Magasins are large department stores built at the end of the 19th century when Paris was undergoing incredible change and growth due to the Industrial Revolution. These retail stores ushered in a new era of reduced and fixed prices, item return and exchange, layaway and home delivery, and, eventually, off-the-rack fashion - all attractive innovations for the rising middle class. Some of the most famous inaugural stores include Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, Le Bon Marché, and Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville.
