Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Compare artificial and natural reforestation methods

The above objectives correspond with the following Alabama Course of Study Objectives: ACOS 12Compare artificial and natural reforestation methods. Identifying sources of tree seedlings; Selecting methods for the handling and care of seedlings; Evaluating tree planting methods .

Overview

Reforestation may be the most important aspect of forest management. Occasionally, trees will reach their maturity and should be harvested. If you have trees that are ready to harvest, will you be prepared to reforest your land?

A landowner should have a reforestation plan in place for tree harvesting. There are two methods of regenerating a stand of trees, naturally and artificially. Naturally is much more slow, and you are not in control of where or what trees come up. Artificial results in faster reforestation, more trees per acre because of placement, but it does come at a normally expensive price. As you ride through your community, notice where trees are now growing and try to determine if they were generated artificially or naturally. How can you tell the difference? Let’s find out!
