Overview

Forests are amazing places filled with excitement, natural wonders of the world, recreation, relaxation and so much more. Before we can appreciate all that forests have to offer we must first realize and understand the potential hazards that exist in the forest. Planning for safety is important in the forest industry, because many of the occupations related to forestry are considered to be hazardous.

Forest safety is a planned activity that requires effort to make it happen. Safe working conditions are the result of training, good equipment, and a safety mindset on the part of the worker. This lesson is intended to raise the level of awareness toward safety practices that are needed to stay safe in the forest.

This lesson will introduce several safety concepts for working in the forest:

  • How often are people injured by topographical hazards?
  • What are some of the topographical hazards to watch out for in the forest?
  • What can I do to avoid being hurt in the forest?
