Introduction

Have you ever been lost? So lost that you could not use any of your resources to help you get home? Your phone was dead. There was a map in the car, but it was so old the road you were on wasn't even on it!

If you have ever been lost, you know how easy it is to get completely turned around and lose your sense of direction. But, usually a few landmarks and asking someone for directions can get you back on your way.

This idea is true with the status of the forests in the 20th century. There was a new direction that needed to be taken. With the help of federal, state, and private landowners, the idea of “cut-out and get-out” was becoming a thing of the past. The forests of the South had been decimated during the 19th century but all was not totally lost.
