Introduction

In Lesson 3.01, you learned that water has several specific properties that makes it essential for life on Earth. All life forms depend on water in some way.

  • Animals, such as fish, depend on water as their habitat and to supply the needed oxygen to keep them alive.
  • Plants depend on water to dissolve nutrients so that the nutrients can be transported into the plants.
  • Water is also essential in transporting nutrients within organisms - for plants and animals.

Since water is so important to living organisms, it is essential that water is distributed to all areas of the environment. In this lesson, you will examine the areas that water is found on earth and how water is distributed to all the different areas of the environment.

Water: From here to there.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Trace the flow of water through the environment.
  • Identify and define the different steps in the water cycle.
  • Identify how water is distributed on Earth.
  • Identify the major uses/consumers of water, such as agricultural, historical, and residential.

Enduring Understanding:

  • The distribution and recycling of water on earth affect how countries use this resource and how the environment is impacted by its limitation.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Environmental Science Objectives: 9 and 13

This lesson incorporates the following Literacy Standard: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R10, W1, W2, W3, W4, W9, and W10
