Introduction

In the two previous lessons, you have learned about the forms of energy, energy conversions, and energy cycles.

Now, you will learn about the relationship between energy and matter, how energy and matter is distributed throughout an ecosystem, and the importance of how energy and matter are distributed.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Describe the relationship between matter and energy.
  • Relate the amount of energy in an ecosystem to the amount of matter.
  • Calculate the amount of energy and matter for each level in an energy pyramid.

Enduring Understanding:

  • Since matter and energy are directly proportional, any changes in a trophic level can negatively affect the level below or above it.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Environmental Science Objective: 3

This lesson incorporates the following Literacy Standards: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R10, W1, W2,W3, W4, W7, W9, and W10
