Introduction

Although nuclear energy is nonrenewable, it is still considered an alternative to fossil fuel since it causes less air pollution. However, that doesn’t mean that nuclear energy does not come with a cost. The operation (that is correct operation) of a nuclear power plant does produce less air pollution, but its emissions also take into account other problems such as the disposal of used fuel. Not only that, the risk involved in the operation of the plant is lethal and possible leakage from waste disposal could be severe.

At the end of this lesson, student will be able to:

  • Evaluate other sources of energy for their effectiveness as alternatives to fossil fuels. (ACOS 3)
  • Compare energy production and waste output in generating electricity. (ACOS 3B2)
