Introduction

As you learned in Lesson 1.01, energy flows through an ecosystem as organisms consume other organisms. If you’ve ever watched an animal show on television, you are sure to recall the scenes where tigers and lions pounce on unsuspecting antelope. Each organism has its own favorite foods just as we do. Some organisms, such as koalas thrive on a good supply of eucalyptus, while others require a larger variety.

At the end of this lesson, student will be able to:

  • Relate energy flow through an ecosystem to food chains and food webs.
  • Differentiate between food chains and food webs.
  • Investigate the producer-consumer relationship between organisms.
  • Recognize the types of consumers.
