Lesson 2.05: The Canterbury Tales

Most everyone in our state chooses a side when Alabama-Auburn football is the topic of conversation. Here’s your chance to show your colors by writing a parody of a few of Chaucer’s lines as if you were describing a group of Alabama or Auburn fans on their way to the Iron Bowl.  Don’t worry; if you don’t like football or UA/AU, you may select any sports team from any place.

Keep Chaucer’s first 5 lines and rewrite the final 3 lines listing the three things you would tell the reader about your Alabama or Auburn fans. Chaucer said he would mention their profession, degree, and apparel. What will you mention?

“But, nonetheless, while I have time and space,
Before my story takes a further pace,
It seems a reasonable thing to say
What their condition was, the full array
Of each of them, as it appeared to me…”

Here are some items you could include but are not limited to:

1. Their profession and obligations
2. Their apparel and transportation
3. Who will be the first to begin “his” story

When you are finished, submit your eight lines to the 2.05 Character Discussion.  Comment on at least two of your classmates’ posts to tell them what you liked of their three lines.
