Epic heroes possess many traits that other characters do not: physical strength, bravery, and wisdom are some of them. These qualities help the heroes on the long and perilous quest or journey. To be a hero in Anglo-Saxon times was to be a warrior.

Beowulf embodies these traits as he goes to battle with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. He travels from the land of the Geats to help the Danes. He risks his life for the greater good of society, killing sea monsters and super natural creatures along the way. Beowulf is more humble than any of the other warriors around him.

Beowulf Based on Hero

When a person is in charge, his people expect him to fulfill his obligations intelligently. They also long for an example to be set that is one of great valor and dignity. Throughout the epic, Beowulf set the tone for a true Anglo-Saxon warrior. Beowulf said he wanted to purge all evil from their land, and he did just that with a sense of confidence that made the people feel at ease.
