Introduction

Following World War I, large numbers of African Americans left the economically depressed South for the more industrial North and found new opportunities, in some ways, both economically and artistically.  African Americans were encouraged to celebrate their heritage, creating the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance which would influence generations to come.
