Introduction

Louisiana's French Roots

Bonjour! Comment allez-vous? Hello! How are you?

Did you know that Louisiana's French roots run deep?

A French explorer named Robert Cavalier de la Salle discovered the territory from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and named it La Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson purchased 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for 15 million dollars (roughly four cents an acre) from Napoleon Bonaparte. This is known as the Louisiana Purchase, frequently called the greatest real estate deal in history.
