Writing Exercises

Read the passage below from Sylvia Plath's "Cut: For Susan O'Neill Roe."

What a thrill -
My thumb instead of an onion.
The top quite gone
Except for a sort of a hinge

Of skin,
A flap like a hat,
dead white.
Then a red plush.

What words, images, and details suggest an ironic tone?

Plath uses several phrases in her poem to make the details more precise. This helps the reader see her point more clearly.
