Introduction
Imagine being on a date with your favorite person at a nice restaurant. When the waiter brings the check, you decide to impress your date and pay for the meal. You hand the waiter your debit card and your date thanks you for your generosity. In a few minutes the waiter comes back and informs you that your card was declined. Your face turns red and you have to ask your date to pay.
How could this have happened? Your debit card is connected to your checking account, and when you checked the balance a few days ago, you had over $100 in your account. Your mind is racing trying to figure out what went wrong. Meanwhile, your date has paid for the meal, and doesn't look impressed.
Later that night it hits you...You wrote a check for $80 to your parents for car insurance. It must have come out of your account between the time now and the time you checked your balance a few days ago.
