History

Word processing software allows the user to create and edit documents. Early programs like, AppleWriter and WordStar, essentially replaced the typewriter. Upgraded operating systems began to include text editors that enabled the user to type on a blank document and was primarily used for writing and editing lines of computer code.

Notepad is an example of a text editor that was included in early versions of Windows. It is still used for tasks that do not require heavy formatting. Plain text editors do not have the functionality of full-blown word processing software.

WordPad is a basic word processing application that has more functionality than a text editor. WordPad allows you to compose, edit and format a document. There are many, more advanced programs available on the market. Microsoft Word is the most widely used software for personal, educational, and business needs. Its popularity can be attributed to ease of use, range of functions, and versatility in applications. Autocorrect, grammar check, spell check, a thesaurus, word count, and advanced publishing tools are just a few of the features available to Word users. Versions are available for Windows and Mac operating systems as well as mobile devices.

Programs like Apple Pages, Google Docs, Microsoft Word Online, and Open Office are good, free alternatives to Word. If you are online, a Google Doc will save as you type. Docs save to your Google Drive, allowing you to access your files from any computer with Internet access. Docs may be shared with another student or teacher, allowing for collaboration and immediate feedback.

It's important to consider which program is right for you. Do you need a program with advanced features and formatting? If so, Microsoft Word is a good option for you. Are you a student needing to type a report for class? Then Google Docs will meet your needs. Either way, there are plenty of options available to you.
