Let's answer Lily's question. Yes, it does matter, and banks will send your check right back if it's not filled out correctly. More worryingly, if you don't write the amount correctly, the bank will accept the check for what you wrote. They can't read your mind.

To avoid potential fraud, you can draw a line from the amount in words down to the word "DOLLARS" on the line under PAY TO THE ORDER OF (see the example below). It is optional, but it is not required.
