Introduction

Alabama Artists

Perhaps, one of Alabama's greatest "natural" resources is its artists; individuals who come from all walks of life, all cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and beliefs. Our state owes a debt of gratitude to these creators and their artistic contributions. They help us understand where we come from as Alabamians; they guide us as we negotiate and discover our own personal pathways in life, and they represent us well to the nation and to the world as "ambassadors of art" who collectively demonstrate the spirit, resilience, and heritage of the people of Alabama.

Elements of Art and Principles of Design

So far, you have worked to identify, analyze, and interpret different artworks based on what the artist used to create them. You have learned about the elemental foundations that provide the structural basis for art-making. You have learned how to apply the principles of design to an artwork and have become aware of some of the stories that artists tell through their art. You have looked at artwork from all over the world and applied your knowledge of how these artists produce their work.

In this lesson, you are ready to bring the process "home" to Alabama as you study and produce artwork reflective of your own personal journey, your own identity, and your own personal statement.
