Smoking Bans

The timeline of smoking bans in the United States is listed below. In 1964 the Surgeon General of the US published conclusive evidence that showed tobacco consumption leads to cancer and other chronic diseases. This was the first declaration by an official of the US. It was not until almost 30 years later before public smoking bans began. See the timeline list below.

TIMELINE

1964: Surgeon General proclaims deadly dangers of smoking.

1995: California first to ban smoking from bars and other public buildings.

1997: Former President Clinton signed an Executive order banning smoking indoors and outdoors of the Legislative Branch buildings of the Federal Government.

1998: Smoking banned on flights.

2000: Tobacco company loses first big lawsuit related to cigarettes causing cancer.

2009: Former President Obama signs a bill placing tobacco companies under the FDA.
