White Blood Cell Disorders
The two common categories of WBC disorders are categorized quantitatively:
- Leukocytosis - excessive numbers of white blood cells
- Lymphocytic leukocytosis – high count of lymphocytes that occurs with a viral infection of the body
- Leukemia – cancer of the bone marrow with high count of immature WBCs
- Leukopenia - insufficient numbers of white blood cells
- Radiation therapy to the bone marrow can cause insufficient numbers of WBCs
- Lymphocytopenia – insufficient number of lymphocytes that can be caused by HIV or influenza
