Introduction
Did you know...
- Did you know your nails grow at a rate of 3mm in a month? That is a little more than a tenth of an inch. In humans, the nail of the index finger grows faster than that of the little finger, and fingernails grow up to four times faster than toenails. This lesson will cover information about the accessory structure of the skin called the nails.
- Did you know the palms of your hands have about 370 sweat glands per cm2 according to Henry Gray’s estimates in The Anatomy of the Human Body from 1918? This is more sweat glands per cm2 than your forehead, abdomen, and back. In this lesson, we will learn about this accessory structure of the skin.
- Do you know what the waxy, translucent white substance coating on this newborn’s skin is? It is a protective coating called vernix caseosa. It is produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin during fetal development. It is easily removed after birth with bathing. In this lesson, we will learn about another accessory structure of the skin called sebaceous glands.
Let's get started learning about these accessory structures of the integumentary system!
