Introduction

Anatomical position is the reference for anatomical nomenclature, or terms. Anatomic terms, such as anterior and posterior, apply to the body when it is in the anatomical position. The body is erect with the face directed forward, the arms at the side, and the palms of the hands facing forward (or supinate).  See Image 1 for an illustration of this position.
