Introduction

The body has a miraculous ability to maintain an equilibrium or homeostasis. This delicate balance occurs in such areas as temperature control, pH levels, blood pressure, sugar levels, and fluid volume, just to name a few. It is made possible by the interaction of the organ systems.

When disease occurs, it is due to “balance” not being maintained.

Stay balanced and stay healthy.

In this lesson, we will learn about homeostasis and its components.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Define homeostasis and the functions of its three components.
  • Describe a negative feedback mechanism.
  • Explain how a homeostatic homeostasis is an equilibrium the body maintains to ensure survival.
  • Pathology mechanism maintains an equilibrium using an example in the body.

Enduring Understandings

  • Homeostasis is an equilibrium the body maintains to ensure survival.
  • Pathology of the body occurs when homeostasis is not maintained.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Anatomy and Physiology standards: 2
