Perhaps one of the more famous theorems in mathematics is the Pythagorean Theorem. This theorem is used with right triangles to determine missing side lengths. This theorem is named after the mathematician and Greek philosopher, Pythagoras of Samos.

Some believed the Pythagoras was a fraud and called him untrustworthy, but he is credited with this theorem. This accreditation probably comes from the fact that Pythagoras was the first to actually prove the logic behind the theorem. When you take Geometry, you will learn how to prove this theorem.

In this lesson, you will learn how the Pythagorean Theorem relates to radical equations; you will use radicals to solve for the missing side lengths of a triangle.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Create equations in one variable.
  • Solve quadratic equations by taking square roots.

The above objectives correspond with the following Alabama Course of Study: Algebra I Objectives: 12 & 18b.
