In the real world, functions and relations have many different applications. In fact, any relationship between two objects that change together is an example of a relation. For example, if you bounce a basketball, each second that passes has one and only one corresponding height.

In this lesson, you will study relations and their correlation with a function. You will study domain and range as well as evaluate functions with a domain value.

How is the coordinate plane similar to a map? The following map shows a part of the state of Ohio. What are the coordinates for Columbus, OH?

"map of Ohio"

In 5.02 Map Coordinates Discussion, answer the questions above. You should also list three other cities in Ohio and estimate the city's coordinates. Reply to two classmates as to whether you agree or disagree with their coordinates. Provide reasoning to justify your response to each classmate.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Understand and apply domain and range
  • Understand the meaning of a relation
  • Understand the meaning of a function
  • Use function notation
  • Evaluate functions for a domain value

The above objectives correspond with the following Alabama Course of Study Objectives: 25, 26.
