Example #2
Graph the step function.
Graph the first piece of the function. Pay careful attention to the endpoints. They are not the same
as the last example.
Graph the second piece of the function. Pay careful attention to the endpoints. They are not the same as the last example.
Graph the third piece of the function. Pay careful attention to the endpoints.
They are not the same as the last example.
Do You Always Have a Line Segment?
Sometimes step functions will not only be intervals with line segments as its graph. There is also the possibility of having a ray as part of the graph.
In this particular case, you will not have two parts to your interval for the algebraic representation.
The arrows will not always show, but know that the far left and far right parts of the graph extend indefinitely.
Example #3
Graph the step function.
Graph the first piece.
Graph the second piece.
Graph the third piece.
