What are Terms?

Now let's look at some of the building blocks for like terms. You will see these on your quiz/test, so make sure to take notes.

Terms are parts of an expression separated by a + or − sign.

Example: 3x2+ 2x + 1

The terms are:

  • 3x2
  • 2x
  • 1

Terms Vocabulary

A coefficient is the number in front of the term: 3x2 + 2x + 1

A constant is a term that contains no letter: 3x2 + 2x + 1

A variable is a letter or symbol used to represent a number in an expression or equation: 3x2+ 2x + 1

Factors

Factors are numbers that are multiplied together to get a product.

3 × 7 = 21
