Plus avec le Passé Composé
So far, we've worked with verbs that take the helping verb avoir. Some verbs, though, take être as the helping verb. Remember Mrs Dr Vandertrampp?

Monter, Rentrer, Sortir, Descendre, Rester, Venir, Aller, Naître, Devenir, Entrer, Revenir, Tomber, Retourner, Arriver, Mourir, Passer, Partir.

The first letter of each of these words spells out Mrs. Dr. Vandertramp. If you can remember that acronym, you might be able to easily recall which verbs use être. This should help you when you are learning to use the passé composé.

You should also recall that these verbs express motion to or from a place. These verbs will take être to form the passé composé instead of avoir. Here are the lists:

• -ER verbs

* Attention: ces verbes sont irréguliers!

Tip: Memorize the verbs that take être. While not an exhaustive list, these are the common ones. The rest will take avoir.

Notice that the participles of the verbs that take avoir always stay the same:

il a mangé

elle a mangé

nous avons mangé

There is no change in these past participles to make agreement for anything. The past participle always stays the same, regardless of gender and number.

The past participles of the verbs conjugated with être must agree in number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine) with the subject:

il est venu

elle est venue

nous sommes venus
