Section One - Part D
When Alberto, Elena and Paco talk to you about the past, they use both kinds of past tense verbs--preterit and imperfect. The imperfect verbs are in bold type in the above paragraphs. Can you locate all of them? Do you know why they chose to use the imperfect in those cases instead of the preterit? A ver..... Have you ever thought about when to say "I was talking" instead of "I talked"? Probably not, but there is a reason why you use one past tense instead of the other in English. It's the same in Spanish, but since you didn't learn it when you were little so that it's second nature, you're going to have to learn some rules. Rules are good because they help organize things - you don't just say things randomly!
It depends on several things.
This action is set at a specific time: yesterday afternoon. Yesterday began and ended as did the afternoon of that day.
Think of it like this. The pretérito is like a photograph/flash camera while the imperfecto is like a movie camera.
Be sure to be in communication with your instructor if you have questions about when to use each form. | |||||||||
